As you may know, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, your PC will still function; you'll just need to manage its security and efficiency on your own.
If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues, there are still several paths you can take:
- Ignore the Deadline: Although not recommended, you can continue using Windows 10 without updates. This leaves your system vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses, and you'll need to find alternative security solutions. Additionally, without technical support and updates, your computer's performance may decline.
- Switch to Linux: If you're tech-savvy and not ready to replace your PC, you can replace Windows 10 with the Linux operating system. Be prepared for potential challenges in transitioning to a new system.
- Use a Technical Loophole to Upgrade: If your PC failed the compatibility check, you might still upgrade it by making a minor registry edit and ensuring Secure Boot with TPM is enabled. ZDNET provides a guide for this process. Note that proceeding with this option means your PC won't receive support or updates, and any issues arising from incompatibility won't be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
- Purchase Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESUs): Microsoft will offer subscription-based ESUs for Windows 10 for up to three years. The cost for businesses is $61 for the first year, doubling each subsequent year. Educators receive a discounted rate starting at $1. These updates do not include technical support and are intended as a temporary solution to encourage upgrading to Windows 11.
- Buy a New PC: If your current device is outdated, consider purchasing a new PC that supports Windows 11. New computers often offer better performance, enhanced security, and increased productivity. Remember to back up your data regularly to prevent data loss.
Before deciding, evaluate your needs and the implications of each option to ensure a smooth transition.
